The details of the martyrs are as follows:-

1. Lt Col Niranjan Kumar         Indian army

Lt Col Niranjan Kumar was  a 34 year old native of Elambassery village of Palakkad district.  He was brought up in Bengaluru as his father Shri EK Sivarajan was employed in BEML.

He first joined the Madras Engineering Group on a Short Service Commission (SSC) and later opted for a permanent commission. At the time of his demise he completed 22 months with the NSG.

He is survived by his father, mother Smt Radha who brought him up (his biological mother Smt rajeshwari passed away when he was just 3 years old), wife Radhika and two year old daughter vismay.

He was martyred during combing operations on 03 January 2016 as part of operations to clear the base of terrorists.  He passed away in a grenade explosion.

Thousands of people gave paid homage to his mortal remains and it was touching to see many many bus loads of school children who arrived to pay their respects.  That visit must have given them a hero to emulate.
